On behalf of IFARA, CARE community advisory board coordinator Jeff Taylor spoke with Jordan Lake, M.D., and Todd Brown, M.D., Ph.D., about research on preventing metabolic complications in people who are taking antiretroviral medications. The biggest news was a switch study for tenofovir alafenamide (TAF), a new version of tenofovir, which showed a 2% improvement in bone density for those taking the new form of the drug.
Another concern, chronic inflammation due to HIV, was found to improve in those who are 100% adherent to their medication regimen. While lipodystrophy is still an important issue for people living with HIV, research shows that it is possible to have a lot of body fat without metabolic problems. Overall, Dr. Lake called the period since CROI 2015 "a good year for metabolics."
