Lynda Dee of the Fair Pricing Coalition (FPC) spoke with coworkers Jeff Berry and Murray Penner, as well as David Evans of Project Inform, about access to HIV and hepatitis C (HCV) medications. FPC negotiates with pharmaceutical companies to make these drugs affordable for patients. Ongoing programs include a co-pay card that will cover medication co-payments and a patient assistance program for people without health insurance. In response to the Affordable Care Act (ACA), a third program is intended to cover coinsurance payments or deductibles for the ACA-sponsored Bronze plans. However, government agencies still disagree about whether such coverage will be permitted. Also mentioned was the fact that some HIV and HCV medications are not on insurance companies' lists of drugs they cover (so-called formularies). The panelists asked viewers to advocate with their local members of Congress around some of these issues.
