Seventy New HIV Cases Reported in Second Quarter in Hong Kong

The Hong Kong Center for Health Protection reported today that 70 new cases of HIV infection were recorded in the second quarter of this year, bringing Hong Kong's total number of cases since 1984 to 2,647. Also in the second quarter of 2005, 20 new AIDS cases were reported, bringing the total number of confirmed AIDS cases since 1985 to 743. Most of the AIDS patients reported in the quarter were co-infected with TB. According to the Department of Health, 48 of the 70 new HIV cases were males; 22 were females. Twenty-eight cases resulted from heterosexual transmission; 20 resulted from homosexual or bisexual transmission; three resulted from intravenous drug use; one resulted from a non-local blood transfusion; and the cause was not identified for 18 cases. Of Hong Kong's 2,647 HIV cases, 78 percent were sexually transmitted, 69 percent heterosexually.
