The University of Maryland Medical System has announced the resignations of Maryland General Hospital President Timothy D. Miller, laboratory Administrative Director James Stewart and Dr. Philip Whelan, director of the hospital's lab and the department of pathology. In reviews prompted by concerns over the validity of hundreds of HIV and hepatitis C lab tests conducted at the hospital between June 2002 and August 2003, the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations all found shortcomings in the lab's operations.
