Indian Doctors Suspended for Refusing to Deliver Baby of HIV-Positive Woman

July 3, 2007

On Saturday, officials from the northern Indian state Uttar Pradesh said two doctors have been suspended for allegedly refusing to deliver the baby of an HIV-infected mother. The father said doctors Urmila Kalra and Abhilasha Gupta instructed him in how to deliver his child at the Lala Lajpat Rai Medical College in Meerut. "Investigations have proved that the doctors did not perform their duties and refused to give treatment to an HIV-positive lady who was in the last stages of labor," said Diwakar Tripathi, a spokesperson for the state, which charged the physicians with dereliction of duty. The Medical Council of India has launched a panel to investigate, and if the doctors are found guilty their licenses will be revoked, said Dr. Debashish Ganguli, a council official.
