Purpose:

The purpose of this activity is to provide HIV physicians, pharmacists, nurses and other health care professionals with the opportunity to supplement their knowledge on issues related to routine HIV testing in the United States. This will be accomplished via a CME/CE summary of the revised recommendations for HIV testing in the United States, their merits and the obstacles to their implementation.

Target Audience:

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, pharmacists, registered nurses and other health care professionals involved in the care of patients with HIV.

Objectives:

Participants who complete this educational activity should be able to:

1. Review the revised recommendations for HIV testing released by U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in September 2006.
2. Cite the arguments supporting the implementation of the revised HIV testing recommendations.
3. List the obstacles to the implementation of the revised HIV testing recommendations.
4. Identify the correlation between increasing HIV testing rates and improving HIV treatment outcomes in the United States.
