Purpose:

The purpose of this activity is to provide HIV physicians, pharmacists, nurses and other health care professionals with the opportunity to supplement their knowledge on issues related to HIV treatment, complications of HIV/HAART, HIV epidemiology and HIV prevention. This will be accomplished via a CME/CE summary of significant clinical developments that occurred during the 2008 calendar year.

Target Audience:

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, pharmacists, registered nurses and other health care professionals involved in the care of patients with HIV.

Objectives:

Participants who complete this educational activity should be able to:

1. Explain the possible clinical ramifications of the most significant HIV-related studies, reports and other clinical developments in HIV that took place in 2008.
2. Recount the latest developments regarding the efficacy and toxicity of HIV antiretroviral agents, HAART regimens and treatment strategies, based on vital research published or presented in 2008.
3. Describe the results of selected research developments in 2008 regarding the transmission or acquisition of HIV.
4. Cite the findings of key, selected studies published or presented in 2008 regarding morbidities and mortality in HIV-infected persons.
