Learning Objectives

Purpose:

The purpose of this activity is to provide HIV physicians, pharmacists, nurses and other health care professionals with the opportunity to supplement their knowledge on issues related to HIV drug resistance and antiretroviral treatment strategies for antiretroviral-naive HIV-infected patients.


Target Audience:

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, pharmacists, registered nurses and other health care professionals involved in the care of patients with HIV.


Objectives:

Participants who complete this educational activity should be able to:

  1. Review U.S. Department of Health and Human Services guidelines with respect to the recommended agents and recent data influencing initial treatment decisions.
  2. Outline key data on how the transmission of HIV drug resistance impacts HIV treatment response and the selection of initial antiretroviral combinations.
  3. Review the important aspects of selecting an initial antiretroviral combination based upon specific patterns of resistance in order to effectively sequence antiretroviral combinations in the future.
  4. Discuss the selection of an initial combination when resistance testing is not available.
