Purpose:

The purpose of this activity is to provide HIV physicians, pharmacists, nurses and other health care professionals with the opportunity to supplement their knowledge on issues related to complications of HIV and HIV treatment. This will be accomplished via a CME/CE summary of highlighted research from 2007 and early 2008.

Target Audience:

This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, pharmacists, nurses and other health care professionals involved in the care of patients with HIV.

Objectives:

Participants who complete this educational activity should be able to:

1. Explain the possible clinical ramifications of the most significant HIV-related studies, reports and other clinical developments in HIV that took place in 2007 and early 2008.
2. Outline recent research regarding the efficacy and safety of antiretrovirals approved in the United States in 2007 and early 2008, as well as other antiretrovirals approved within the past three years.
3. Recount the latest developments regarding the efficacy and toxicity of HIV antiretroviral agents, HAART regimens and treatment strategies, based on vital research published or presented in 2007 and early 2008.
4. Describe the results of selected research developments in 2007 and early 2008 regarding the transmission or acquisition of HIV, including sperm washing, HIV vaccines and the use of crystal methamphetamine.
5. Cite the findings of key, selected studies published or presented in 2007 and early 2008 regarding morbidities and mortality in HIV-infected persons.
