Purpose Statement:

The purpose of this activity is to provide HIV physicians, nurses and other health care professionals with the opportunity to supplement their knowledge on issues related to the treatment of HIV-infected patients. This will be accomplished via a CME- and CE-accredited summary of highlighted research from the 4th International AIDS Society Conference on HIV Pathogenesis, Treatment and Prevention.

Target Audience:

This continuing-education activity has been developed for the educational benefit of physicians, nurses and other health care professionals involved in the clinical care of, or research efforts that impact the clinical care of, individuals with HIV.

Objectives:

Participants who complete this educational activity should be able to:

1. Explain the clinical importance of research presented at IAS 2007 from the CASCADE, HOPS and SMART studies exploring the question of when to initiate antiretroviral therapy.
2. Discuss the findings of selected studies presented at IAS 2007 regarding the performance of antiretrovirals in development within the context of first-line HIV treatment.
3. Analyze the potential impact of the latest TITAN and DUET study results on clinical strategies regarding the treatment of antiretroviral-experienced patients.
4. Summarize some of the important developments out of IAS 2007 on the topic of newly approved antiretrovirals and antiretrovirals in development.
5. Demonstrate an understanding of the potential for HLA testing to dramatically reduce the incidence of abacavir hypersensitivty reaction among HIV-infected patients.
6. Discuss details presented at IAS 2007 on the SWEET and BICOMBO treatment-switching studies, particularly as they relate to impact on metabolic parameters.
