(MEC) and The Body PRO. MEC is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

Medical Education Collaborative designates this educational activity for a maximum of 0.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Learning Objectives

Purpose Statement:

The purpose of this activity is to provide HIV physicians, nurses and other health care professionals with the opportunity to supplement their knowledge on issues related to the treatment of HIV-infected patients. This will be accomplished via a CME- and CE-accredited summary of highlighted research from the 4th International AIDS Society Conference on HIV Pathogenesis, Treatment and Prevention.


Target Audience:

This continuing-education activity has been developed for the educational benefit of physicians, nurses and other health care professionals involved in the clinical care of, or research efforts that impact the clinical care of, individuals with HIV.


Objectives:

Participants who complete this educational activity should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an awareness of the evolving causes of morbidity/mortality and shifting life spans in HIV-infected patients.
  2. Understand new research presented at IAS 2007 regarding hepatitis C transmission and drugs in development.
  3. Summarize highlight studies from IAS 2007 regarding treatment of HIV/hepatitis B coinfection.
  4. Discuss recent research regarding the potential for pre-exposure prophylaxis to assist serodiscordant couples seeking to conceive a child.
  5. Analyze, based on research presented at IAS 2007, recent trends in the use of post-exposure prophylaxis after nonoccupational HIV exposure.
  6. Demonstrate knowledge of the benefits and drawbacks of utilizing a "patch test" to gauge a patient's sensitivity to abacavir.
  7. Summarize the potential for the development of orally bioavailable fusion inhibitors, based on research presented at IAS 2007.
