Tony Fauci on HIV Prevention (Video)

September 11, 2015

Fred Schaich of IFARA spoke with Anthony S. Fauci, M.D., director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, about HIV prevention research and the U.S. government's actions to keep the virus from spreading. The follow-up to the HPTN 052 study and results from the START study show that early treatment of HIV infection prevents both the transmission of the virus to uninfected partners and serious events in HIV-positive people. However, the "underlying core and basis for any prevention approach is testing," said Fauci. He advocated testing everyone once for HIV in the context of regular medical care, with repeated testing for those who exhibit any risk factors for acquiring the virus.

According to Fauci, those who test negative for HIV should be moved into a "prevention continuum," similar to the "care continuum," so that they can be counseled and followed up with, and their adherence to prevention methods -- including pre-exposure prophylaxis, if appropriate -- can be ensured. These tactics are reflected in the newly revised National AIDS Strategy and in Governor Andrew Cuomo's blueprint to end the HIV epidemic in New York State. For these tactics to work, however, prevention strategies must be tailored to risk ramifications, Fauci concluded.
