Francois Venter on Access to HIV Treatment and Prevention in South Africa (Video)

August 27, 2015

Fred Schaich of IFARA spoke with Francois Venter, deputy executive director of the Wits Reproductive Health & HIV Institute at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa, about access to HIV treatment and prevention. Venter works mostly in South Africa, the "epicenter of the HIV epidemic," as he put it. Traditional health care approaches often hinder the roll-out of HIV prevention services there, he said.

He believes that verticalized services for special populations, such as sex workers, transgender people, men who have sex with men, and adolescent girls, are an effective way to deliver both HIV prevention services, such as pre-exposure prophylaxis, and HIV treatment. "Once someone has decided to walk through the door" of a specialized clinic, the stigma associated with going there is no longer a problem, Venter believes. However, stigma may present a "barrier to walking through that door in the first place," he conceded.
