AIDS 2014 Video Blog #4: One World, One Place, Thousands of Voices -- The Awesome Advocates of HIV/AIDS

July 24, 2014

Inspiring stories of people living with HIV.

Thousands of advocates have devoted themselves to the cause of HIV so completely that they have traveled this week to Melbourne -- an extremely expensive, time-consuming trip. These people are outspoken and driven with enormous passion, as you might expect. In this video report from the conference, you're going to hear directly from them.

Try, if you can, to hold it together while hearing from a man from Nigeria who risks imprisonment simply by providing services to gay men; in his country, such a nefarious act is punishable by a decade in prison. Marvel at Wonder Woman, an Australian aboriginal drag performer who has taken on the mantle of a superhero HIV awareness figure. And hear the impassioned pleas of the disenfranchised -- including transgender people, those from remote locales of the planet, and those who feel as though they're still invisible even at the conference they're attending.

A willingness to help others is one of our most precious human traits. As you will see, it survives even the most dire life circumstances. I don't know about you, but after hearing these people's words, it's made me take stock of my own place in this world and the privileges I enjoy.

Among so many delegates who share a common energy for HIV advocacy, friendships easily develop -- and sometimes a lot more than that. And so my word of the day isn't simply Australian, it's universal: "love." I have a very special message at the end of this video that demonstrates exactly what I mean.

Thanks for watching our continuous coverage, and please be well.
