20th International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2014)

Dutch Researcher, at AIDS 2014, Remembers the Friend He Lost on Flight MH17 (Video)

July 22, 2014

For the contingent of Dutch attendees at the 20th International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2014) in Melbourne, Australia, the conference so far has proven to be an extremely difficult -- yet supportive -- experience. Peter Reiss, M.D., Ph.D., is a professor of internal medicine at the Academic Medical Center within the University of Amsterdam, where he worked alongside his colleague and close friend, Joep Lange, M.D., Ph.D., who died in the destruction of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17. In this interview with Fred Schaich of IFARA, Reiss (who only managed to avoid being on MH17 himself thanks to an unusual decision to arrive at the conference early) talks about how he has handled the past several days.

Reiss also speaks about the key questions he faces within the area of expertise on which he plans to speak at AIDS 2014: the intersection of HIV and aging, particularly the challenges faced by HIV-positive people age 65 and older.

The video above has been posted on with permission from our partners at the International Foundation for Alternative Research in AIDS (IFARA). Visit IFARA's website or YouTube channel to watch more video interviews from the conference, as well as earlier meetings.
