CROI 2014: The Science and Future of PrEP (Video)
April 14, 2014
Mike Cohen, M.D., Dawn Fukuda, Jonathan Mermin, M.D., M.P.H., Carl Dieffenbach, Ph.D., and Dawn Smith, M.D., M.S., M.P.H., sit down to talk about the history of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), the challenges of implementing current PrEP options and new approaches. The panelists also discuss how to overcome adherence and access issues, provider unease with prescribing the medication, as well as how to move people toward behavioral change so they can be taken off the drug.
Other issues explored include new approaches to longer-acting medication-based prophylaxis, such as monthly injectable drugs and broadly neutralizing antibodies, the use of circumcision as a prevention tool, and the development of other forms of non-behavioral prevention, such as topical agents.
