An editorial in the Journal of Leukocyte Biology reports promising results using a developmental cancer drug, JQ1, to activate latent HIV, so antiviral drugs can destroy it. Research so far has used human cells in glass, so clinical trials would be years away. The results increase hope, however, that it will eventually be possible to "flush" latent HIV from its hiding places in resting CD4 cells, making it possible to eradicate the virus with the drugs now used to control it.
