HAART May Not Be Enough to Normalize Immune Aging in Women, Study Finds
A Poster Spotlight From CROI 2012
March 7, 2012
In this analysis of data from the historic Women's Interagency HIV Study, HAART decreased immune activation, exhaustion, senescence, and apoptosis in CD8+ T cells (cohort mean age: 41.2 years). However, these levels did not become normalized even after a year of HAART. Therapies that reverse immune system aging used in combination with HAART may be warranted, the research suggests.
