China: Local Officials Punished After Eight Patients Contract Hepatitis C

Six people have been fired or suspended for their role in the hepatitis C virus infections of eight patients in Henan province. The eight were receiving dialysis treatments at Xin'an County People's Hospital, according to the county government, whose statement on the matter blamed improper conduct for the infections. Those fired were a deputy director of the county's health bureau and the hospital's president, a vice president, and a chief nurse. A deputy county governor and the county health department's director have been suspended pending further investigation.
