crypto again

QUESTION:

My pt with the crypto is still alive. She is now in a nursing home in NJ that specializes in HIV. The interesting thing is that the hospital would not give her antiretrovirals because they were afraid of the crypto and the IRS. Well she was started on antiretrovirals in the nursing home and her tcells are up to 44. They had been 16. They claim that IRS is not that strong in crypto. Just thought you would like to know the progress

    Thanks for your post.

    Cyrptococcal IRIS definitely can occur; hence it's important to make sure that the Cryptococcal treatment is underway prior to initiation of HAART.

    Given that your patient was able to be transferred to nursing home and has initiated HAART (with an early increase in her CD4), I'm encouraged about her prognosis.
