How long to AIDS

Posted: Jun 27, 2008

QUESTION:

If a person is infected with HIV by another person with a very high viral load and low CD4 count, will this be a predictor of how long the host will take to convert to aids from HIV?

RESPONSE FROM:

    Thank you for your post.

An average HIV infected person will progress from initial infection to an AIDS-defining event in several years- usually around 5-8 years. A recent study from the AEIDRP cohort suggests that for some persons, this time is much quicker, maybe as short as 1.5 years to the time of needing HIV medications.

As far as I'm aware, there's little data that links the rate of disease progression to the viral load or CD4 count of the source patient.
