how long i will survive with hiv

Posted: Apr 22, 2008

QUESTION:

dear doctor pls can i ask u one question i am an hiv since 2001 and i am on med from 2001 can u tell how long i will survive

RESPONSE FROM:

No crystal balls here, so survival is not something I or others reading your email can guess at. In HIV infection, antibody production goes wild. Some of these can be made against our own cells including platelets. When this happens the trusty spleen removes the antibody coated cells and when the platelet production can not keep pace with the destruction, the count drops.

Removal of the spleen is not as bad a s it sounds and can work wonders for the platelet count. I would not cross it off the list given steroids (designed to calm immune function) has not worked.
