Switch from d4T to Truvada

Posted: Nov 18, 2007

QUESTION:

I have suffered severe lipodystrophy effects and I am switching the regimen from d4T and 3TC to Truvada + nevirapine with the advice of my doctor. I am worried that one of Truvada's side effects is still lipodystrophy. Should I be worried and is there a better option?

RESPONSE FROM:

    Thanks for your post.

Tenofovir (part of Truvada) is associated with a far lower risk of lipo than d4T (Zerit). I'd feel very comfortable with this switch if it is because of severe lipo.

Bear in mind that any improvment will take a long time, so don't expect rapid changes. Nevertheless, the switch should help prevent any worsening.
