Truvada, Kidney Disease and Depression
Posted: Aug 27, 2007
QUESTION:
At the beginning of the year I was started on Truvada, Prezista, & Norvir. I have Diabetes, A1c 7.0, Stage 2-3 Kidney Disease, and depression. First does the kidney disease necessitate a change in medication doseage, and I read that one side effect of Truvada is depression. My depression has been severe and unrelenting since about the time I started Truvada. Is there a possible correlation. Thank you,

RESPONSE FROM:
If your kidney function is not normal, it is likely the dose of Truvada should be altered. This may mean that the two medications in Truvada may have to be taken separately as the adjustment to their doses may not be the same.
Your doctor should know this and if she does not, it may be time for a switch to someone who is less likely to hurt you.
I am not aware of any evidence linking Truvada and depression. This should not be a concern.
