combivir or truvada

QUESTION:

which meds combivir or truvada with reyataz is better as far as toxicity and side effect only?

RESPONSE FROM:

    Thanks for your post--

Truvada. Part of your question has been addressed in the recent Gilead 934 clinical study comparing AZT/3TC (Combivir) to tenofovir/FTC (Truvada) in combination with efavirenz (Sustiva) [not atazanavir]. This study showed superiority (using intent-to-treat analyses) of TDF/FTC to AZT/3TC, primarily because of dose limiting side effects (nausea, headaches and anemia). There were little differences in the rates of virological failure between the two arms of the study.

What 934 doesn't address with regard to your question is the need to add ritonavir (Norvir) when tenofovir is coadministered with atazanavir. AZT/3TC + atazanavir can be administered without this need for ritonavir boosting. To what extent this difference will offset the additional risk of inital AZT-related side effects is speculation.

    I hope this helps. BY
