swelling and tenderness of breast of male patient

QUESTION:

I am currently swelling in this area and I am taking Truvada and Sustiva.What could be the cause and should I be concerned. 42 years old and 180 lbs.CD4 count of 213 and undetectable.

    Enlargement of the breast tissue (gynecomastia) can occur as a result of HIV or medications-- deciding what's the root cause can be a problem, but marijuana (or dronnabinol) and efavirenz (Sustiva) have been linked to painful breast enlargement in both men and women.

    I'd speak to your healthcare professional about your symptoms-- sometimes discontinuation of the culprit medication can significantly improve things.
