Truncal Obesity/Lipodsytrophy

Posted: Mar 2, 2006

QUESTION:

Has there been any research conducted on abating or mitigating truncal obesity/lipodystrophy after discontinuing anti-retroviral therapydrugs that precipitate this condition?

RESPONSE FROM:

Well, for one thing I am still a bit unclear which medicine cause truncal obseity so which to discontinue is a problem. Although the popular belief is that PIs cause this, studies have not been consistent in supporting this impression.

Recent data from the Retro conference suggests that in men with lowish testosterone levels, supplemental testosterone can reduce subcutaneous adipose tissue but does not improve visceral fat. In patients with glucose intolerance, metformin has decreased abdominal girth (and weight) but side effects can be a problem.
