Efavirenz and nocturia

Posted: Jan 9, 2006

QUESTION:

I have a 27 years-old patient who has been receiving Combivir and Sustiva for the last 4 months with excelent outcome. He came to my office with a 2 weeks history of nocturia. He stopped medication since he thought it was due to efavirenz. He says that the symptom vanished as soon as he did it. I ruled out other posible causes of nocturia in this patient. Have you ever heard about nocturia related to the use of Efavirenz? Thanks and happy New Year

RESPONSE FROM:

    Thanks for your post.

I'm not aware of any cases of nocturia due to efavirenz. It would seem unusual to me to see a new adverse event like this occur after 4 months of drug exposure, but I suppose it's possible.

A Pubmed search also comes up "dry", so to speak. It's probably worth bringing the case to the attention of your local Bristol Myers Squibb representative.

    Thanks for posting, BY
