Is Viramune an option?

Posted: Aug 2, 2005

QUESTION:

After taking Sustiva, developing a severe reaction to it (and thus ceasing to take it under a doctors care), I am wondering some months later if I might consider taking Viramune or if my reaction to Sustiva (high fevers, rash, etc.) would be predictive of my success on Viramune.

RESPONSE FROM:

It is difficult to say. There are data that suggest a change from nevirapine to efavirenz can be accomplished. Whether it works the other way around is less clear.

If you are a man with a CD4 cell count above 400 or a women with a count greater than 250, I would be cautious about using nevirapine as such indiviudals are at greatest risk of serious adverse effects of this drug.

If you have other options, I would pursue them.
