QUESTION:

I have treated many HIV POSITIVE/AIDS patients in South America using extra coorporal blood irradiation with ultra violet light therapy obtainig 50 reduction in viral load with out having to woory about resistant to the tratment. All laboratory studies(cbc with platalets, electrolytes are normal. Why USA is not using ultra violet light therapy to treat HIV/AIDS? Dr L.

RESPONSE FROM:

Dear Dr. L- thanks for your question.

Extracorporeal UV had been tried by some in the United States in the past-- there had been some very serious adverse effects related to therapy. If memory serves me, there were cases of hemolysis, also little or no effect on CD4 cells or viral load were documented.

Yes, there's no emergence of resistance, but if there is little efficacy, I can't support the approach. I'd encourage you to compile your South American experience, positive or negative. -BY
