Vaginal gel/AIDSVAX

Posted: Dec 14, 2002

QUESTION:

Thank you for taking my question. I was wondering if you could give me your professional opinion on the Phase III HIV vaccine being developed by VaxGen (AIDSVAX)and on the vaginal gel that may have some prophylactic benefit in the spread of HIV? Do you think the vaccine is approvable? Thanks again.

RESPONSE FROM:

It is not possible to comment with any validity on the VaxGen product without seeing the data - and so far the studies are not complete and there are no early presentations of the data to comment on. It may be doing great or having no impact at all and without info I cannot know which is closer to truth. So like you I will need to await the results of studies ongoing. Similarly the topical gels that are under study are very important to develop and some may work out great. But for now the work is underway and I've not seen any interim results to judge from.

But I think it is likely that one day we'll have a topical microbicide - and certainly there is enough work going on vaccines to be optimistic that we might find one. But HIV has many features that may both of these a challenge - and it may be years before we know how close we are to the goal of having effective products...

    so stay tuned.
