Viread/Coviracil

Posted: Dec 5, 2002

QUESTION:

I saw the big news from Gilead that they will be taking over the development of coviracil.

How long do you think it will take for a combined version of viread/coviracil to be approved?

Do you see this as a good fit?

Dr. Phillips

RESPONSE FROM:

Dear Dr. Phillips- thank you for your question.

The proposed acquisition of Triangle by Gilead certainly raises some very interesting questions. Clearly an area of interest is the development of a fixed dose formulation of coviracil (FTC) and tenofovir. Since both drugs can be potentially administered once daily, this would be a very attractive once-daily combination.

The development of such a FDC drug would take some time, perhaps a couple of years-- requiring a significant number of studies of bioequivalence and chemical stability. Of course, this all hinges on the approval of FTC too. -BY
