HIV positive after vaccination
Posted: Jan 17, 2006
QUESTION:
Hi there,
the specialist file from a recently infected HIV positive male, 29yo, CD4 at 540, HIV-RNA count at log 4,47, asymptomatic.
The patient joined HIV vaccination trails 3 years ago when he was HIV negative, the file from the immunologists state "a cellular immunity of 34% was observed". What does this mean, and what effect could this partial immunity cause?
Thanks!

RESPONSE FROM:
Thanks for your post.
I'm not sure exactly what this number means, except that the patient has some measure of T-cell mediated, HIV-specific immunity. Whether this occured as a function of the vaccination trial or because of HIV infection itself, depends on when the test was drawn. If it's the former, it clearly shows that in this patient, the level of immunity was not protective. BY
