Treatment of Primary HIV Infection

QUESTION:

Is there adequate evidence to support to support the routine treatment of primary HIV infection?

RESPONSE FROM:

    Thanks for your post.

I do not believe that there is sufficient evidenced-based data to support routine use of antiretroviral medications during primary infection. On a practical note, we offer treatment to patients who present prior early in primary infection (prior to full seroconversion) though with the caveat that the data that supports benefit is incomplete.
