Blood Filtration for HIV

Posted: Mar 14, 2004

QUESTION:

Hello Drs.,

I have been reading about a pre-clinical trial on a device showing the ability to remove up to 90 percent of gp120 from HIV infected blood in 1 hour, the device is called a Hemopurifier. This seems to be somewhat similiar to dialysis and a real enhancement to treating HIV. I would be interested in your thoughts on this. Thanks.

RESPONSE FROM:

    Dear friend in the Poconos-

Since the majority of HIV is actually not circulating, but resident in lymph nodes and the reticuloendothelial system, I'm not sure if the theoretical basis of hemofiltration for HIV makes any sense to me.

Whether I'm correct or not, I'd be very skeptical until I saw any human data on the efficacy and safety of the device before drawing any conclusions.

    Thanks for reading. BY
