HIV VACCINE?

Posted: Aug 9, 2003

QUESTION:

AS HIV SEEMS ABLE TO USE THE BODIES NORMAL IMMUNE RESPONSES EG CD4 & HELPER CELLS, IT WOULD SEEM THAT FOR A VACCINE TO WORK IT WOULD HAVE TO WORK DIFFERENTLY THAN NORMAL.

DO YOU AGREE WITH THIS? ANY THOUGHTS ON HOW THIS COULD BE DONE? BN

RESPONSE FROM:

What is needed in a vaccine is that we must train the immune system to recognize HIV before it sees the real thing. If this can be done successfully - then our immune system - antibody as well as cell mediated - might be able to recognize HIV and have a far more vigorous and successful battle after initial exposure - and instead of getting infected by this virus - perhaps successfully kill it off. That is at least the hope and goal. We have some animal experiments that continue to encourage us since we can make this happen in certain settings of similar virus strains. We still however don't know if we can make this happen with OUR immune system fighting THIS virus, at least with anything we've been able to create as vaccination so far.

    But the search continues...
