Let's be clear here. The virus, HIV infects individuals. These persons are "HIV infected", irrespective of there immunological or clinical status. As such persons with the clinical syndrome "AIDS" are also HIV infected.
AIDS is defined as having either clinical or laboratory evidence of marked immunodeficiency. The clinical manifestations of AIDS includes (but is not limited to) a variety of infections, like Pneumocystis, Mycobacterium avium or CMV (end-organ disease). A HIV infected person can also have an AIDS-diagnosis by having an absolute CD4 count below 200 or CD4 percentage below 15%.
Lastly there are a number of dermatological conditions associated with HIV infection-- too many to list or describe here in detail. Not all rashes, it need be said, are associated with HIV. -BY
