DVT in AIDS

Posted: Aug 16, 2005

QUESTION:

Sir,I am practicing in western Maharashtra[India]one of the most seriously afftected areas.Over last one year I have come across three cases of DVT.Two of them were not on ART and died of extensive pulmonary TB.The last one is on ART and developed DVT that responded well to anticoagulants.I would like to know if there is any statistically significant correlation between DVT and HIV infection/ART.Dr Sunil Patwardhan,Satara,India

RESPONSE FROM:

I am unaware of an association between deep vein thrombosis and HIV or its therapies. However, I have seen arterial clots in several patients and have been concerned that elevated lipid levels may be a contributing factor.

As you know, malignancies can also complicate advanced AIDS and be difficult to detect. These can lead to a hypercoaguable state wherein clots are more likely to develop.
