hiv/hepC COINFECTION

QUESTION:

A patient hiv/hepC coinfected,that had recieved pegintron + ribavirin and not respond, can him be treated again with pegasys and ribavirin.


  

RESPONSE FROM:   

    Yes, but the response rates are likely to be very low since these agents are similar in potency. Another consideration is using consensus interferon (Infergen) along with ribavirin. There are studies that have been done in monoinfected HCV patients that demonstrated reasonable response rates with this combination following failure of pegylated interferon.
