Alternatives to Flagyl in the treatment of giardiasis

QUESTION:

What would be an alternative to the use of Flagyl (metronidazole) for the treatment of giardiasis? If a patient demonstrates persistent symptoms and has not cleared the infection via two previous treatments of this drug, are there alternatives available? patient who has persistent infection and does not appear to be responding to


  

RESPONSE FROM:   

    Thanks for posting. Tinadazole is an agent (not available in the US) that is effective in a single dose of 2grams. Albendazole 400mg daily for 5 days may be effective, but reports in adults have shown mixed results. Nitazoxanide is FDA approved for giardiasis in children. In adults, 500 mg twice daily for 5 days have been studied and shown efficacy as well.
