Alternative treatment for Flagyll-resistant giardiasis

Posted: May 17, 2003

QUESTION:

This is the second time I've submitted this question and am disappointed I've not yet received a response. An acquaintance of mine is dealing with a persistent case of giardiasis that has not responded to repeated treatments with Flagyll. He has lost substantial amount of weight, has ongoing intestinal distress, and is dealing with fatigue. Are you aware of any other available treatment for giardiasis when Flagyll appears ineffective?

RESPONSE FROM:

Sorry for the frustration. But I can tell you that this site is meant to be a common ground for HIV management issues - and sadly we aren't expert in everything including the treatment of giardia. And so I am not aware of other options. But there are other Web Sites with more general advice from Infectious Disease experts that can comment on other conditions other that HIV itself. And of course, just going to a reliable ID textbook and checking in the chapter on giardia might come up with a few options, since it is fair to say that there are others who don't tolerate flagyl...

Sorry that we can't be of help here - but if there are HIV management issues - feel free to try back.
