PAPs after a hysterectomy

Posted: Nov 23, 2007

QUESTION:

Are routine PAP smears necessary in women with HIV who had a hysterectomy for reasons other than cancer? I haven't been able to find any clear guidlines as to whether the recommendations are any different for women who are HIV positive. Thanks!

RESPONSE FROM:

    Thanks for your post.

    This circumstance often generates confusion.

Since HIV+ women are at increased risk of HPV-related genital tract malignancies, women who have had hysterectomies should continue to have regular vaginal Pap smear screening (evaluating the entire lower tract area).

Summary of the management of gynecological health issues of HIV+ women are published by the DHHS and are a useful reference.
