5 Weeks Oraquick Test

Posted: Aug 28, 2007

QUESTION:

Dear:

I am male about 37 years old. I had unprotected test with friend of mine (female) with unknown hiv status.

5 weeks later I took a oraquick test and it was negative.

Now my question is:

1./ I know 5 weeks are not enough, but what is the sensitivity of of Oraquick compared to other antibody tests (lab test) at this time frame (5 weeks).

RESPONSE FROM:

The sensitivity of the oral test is similar to that of other HIV antibody tests, but if your question is whether the test at 5 weeks is sufficient to rule out HIV infection, this remains too soon to be sure.

Follow up tests at 3 months (and possible 6 months) is the standard, following a known HIV exposure.

    Be safe out there, BY
