compatible regimens for couples

Posted: Aug 25, 2007

QUESTION:

In a couple where both partners have HIV is it better to have them on different regimens to avoid the immediate failure of both partners if one develops resistance? and if so how many drugs should be different or is it generally preferable to be on the same regimen to potentially increase adherence?

My current example is one partner currently on boosted atazanavir, tenofovir, and emtriva. Partner about to start meds should I think about the same regimen or for example combivir and sustiva? Thank you

RESPONSE FROM:

    Thanks for your post.

If everthing is equal (this is a big statment, given my strong sentiment to individualized care), then many seroconcordant couples prefer to be on the same treatment regimen. This facilitates adherence and often provides mutual support. BY
