Abd Visceral Fat

Posted: May 12, 2007

QUESTION:

Abd visceral fat Is there any surgical remedy for it? are visceral fat are attached or floating in peritoneal cavity?

RESPONSE FROM:

Visceral fat is attached to the ommentum. Surgery has not proved to be a great help here given the difficulty of dissecting out the deep fat.

Growth hormone and growth hormone releasing factor (the latter is in clinical trials) have been found to reduce visceral fat. Growth hormone is effective but in the US is expensive and associated with some troublesome side effects at doses of the drug that have been studied.

Diet and aggressive exercise have been found to reduce fat accumulation in the belly of HIV+ patients. Working out with a trainer 5 days a week should produce some positive results.
