hiv and hep b

Posted: May 12, 2007

QUESTION:

Is is true that simultaneous infection of hep b and hiv delays or lengthens the widow period for showing positive to an hiv antibody test? After showing neg. to an antibody test 3 months after possible exposure (unprotected sex m-f sex)is it reasonable to believe the results?

RESPONSE FROM:

I am unaware of a major interaction wherein HBV infection would delay HIV seroconversion. If the HIV test is negative at 3 months, it is highly unlikely that HIV infection occured.
