Can 10days hiv Infect

Posted: May 12, 2007

QUESTION:

Can Hiv that is less than 10days infect another partner?lets say Mrs.A had unprotected sex with Mr B who, also had unprotected sex with a sex worker.the sex worker aready hiv +ve.The sex between Mr B and the sex worker took place 10days before the sex of Mr B and Mrs A.Can Mrs A be Infected?

RESPONSE FROM:

A man infected with HIV is indeed highly infectious 10 days later. After HIV enters the body it then replicates rapidly, typically reaching viral load levels in the millions. There are data to suggest that much of HIV transmission occurs during this acute period following recent infection. People who are recently infected are likely repeating the risk behavior that led to infection and therefore have opportunities to spread the virus unknowingly.

So, Mrs. B is at greatest risk of infection from Mr. A during the first few weeks after his infection - even though he may be antibody negative.
