HIV Strains

QUESTION:

I was told by someone that there are 3 strains of hiv-(a,b,and c)and that if you have type a and are taking the medicine for type a and infect someone,they will be immune to the medicine.Is this true?

    Thanks for your post.

    There are multiple subtypes (or clades) of HIV. The most common subtype in the US and Europe is subtype B.

    For the most part (and fortunately), medications that were developed to treat subtype B also are very effective for other HIV subtypes. If you're interested a presentation by Dr. Jonathon Shapiro at the CROI meeting this week provides a very nice summary of this subject. BY
