efavirenz

QUESTION:
Patient of 40 years in HAART with azt 3tc and efavirenz to 800 doses of mg day so that it was in tto tuberculosis, patient already I finish treatment for tuberculosis ,I must return to the 600 dose of mg from efavirenz? thanks

Thanks for your post.
Yes. Since rifampin induces the metabolism of efavirenz (EFV, Sustiva, Stocrin), when both are used together, the dose of EFV is increased to 800 mg. Once the rifampin is discontinued, you should decrease the dose of EFV to 600 mg-- otherwise, your patient may be more prone to have EFV-related side effects.
