Reliability of negative test at 11 weeks
Posted: Oct 10, 2006
QUESTION:
I was wondering, if a person has an occupational exposure (ive posted twice here, regarding a 21g needlestick injury suffered after taking blood from a terminal AIDS patient...shallow, visible blood on device), how reliable is a negative 11 weeks test if a full 2 course regimen of PEP is taken?
Would your answer be different if I have had a 2 month period of bilateral submandibular adenopathy?
thanks.

RESPONSE FROM:
Thank you for your post.
With your exposure, I'd assess that your risk of acquiring HIV is quite low, especially in light of PEP.
A negative ELISA at 11 weeks is highly reassuring, though the formal requirement in most PEP settings is a negative test at 6 months.
Isolated submandibular lymphadenopathy doesn't affect the need for or timing of, follow up antibody testing.
I hope this helps. Best of luck. BY
